Frances Mayes a San Francisco-based literature professor, literary reviewer and author, who is struggling in writing her latest book. Her life takes an unexpected turn when her husband files for divorce, who wants to marry a woman is having an affair, and the two end up in a great debate. So, Frances accepts a friends offer to take a vacation in Tuscany, which ultimately is gift to escape dealing with the divorce. While on a tour in Tuscany, Frances ditches the tour and purchases an aged villa, that needs some fixing-up. Frances has many obstacles in eking out a productive and happy life in her new surroundings. Frances is captivated by the beauty and warmth of her home, embraces new friends and finds herself immersed in a life-changing adventure.
